The key feature and underlying pathogenic factor that contributes to these conditions is the persistent recruitment of leukocytes which are thought to contribute to the vascular and tissue injury. Inflammation is a normal response to infection and/or cellular and tissue injury, however following ischemia/reperfusion and sepsis, an over-exuberant or inappropriate inflammatory response leads to deleterious consequences to host tissue.
